What to Do If Guru (Jupiter) Is Weak: Mantras & Remedies

Editorial Team ·

A weak Jupiter in your birth chart can affect wisdom, abundance, and healing capacity. Learn the traditional Vedic remedies — mantras, gemstones, colours, and daily practices.

In Vedic astrology, Jupiter — known as Guru — is considered the most benefic planet in the chart. It governs wisdom, expansion, abundance, healing, spirituality, and the capacity to teach and guide others. When Jupiter is strong, these qualities flow relatively naturally. When it’s weak, afflicted, or in a difficult position, people often experience the opposite: difficulty accessing their own wisdom, financial stagnation, challenges with spiritual connection, and a sense of being cut off from grace.

If your Vedic birth chart shows a weak Jupiter, there are time-tested remedies from the Jyotish tradition that can help strengthen its positive influence.

How to Know If Your Jupiter Is Weak

A Jupiter is considered weak or afflicted in several circumstances.

It may be placed in the signs of Capricorn or Gemini, where it functions with less ease. It may be conjunct or aspected by malefic planets like Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu in a way that constrains its expression. It may be combust — too close to the Sun to express itself freely. Or it may simply be in a house where it has less natural strength to offer.

Experientially, a weak Jupiter often shows up as chronic self-doubt, difficulty with faith (in oneself or in life), repeated financial obstacles despite effort, trouble with teachers or mentors, and a feeling of being spiritually disconnected or undeserving.

The Jupiter Mantra: Brihaspati Mantra

The most direct remedy for a weak Jupiter is the regular recitation of the Brihaspati mantra. The traditional mantra is:

Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Guruve Namah

This mantra is ideally chanted on Thursdays — Jupiter’s day — at sunrise, in a clean and quiet space. The traditional count is 108 repetitions using a mala (prayer beads). If that feels like too much to start, even 21 repetitions with sincere attention is meaningful.

The Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) is also considered highly beneficial for strengthening Jupiter, as Vishnu is the deity most closely associated with the qualities Jupiter governs.

Gemstone: Yellow Sapphire

Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj in Hindi) is the primary gemstone remedy for Jupiter. It is worn on the index finger of the right hand, ideally set in gold, and ideally on a Thursday during a Jupiter hora (auspicious time).

Before wearing a gemstone remedy, consultation with a trained Vedic astrologer is strongly recommended. Gemstones amplify planetary energy, and their effects can be significant. The right stone worn correctly can be deeply beneficial; the wrong stone or the wrong timing can complicate matters.

Yellow topaz and citrine are sometimes used as more accessible alternatives, though they are generally considered to have a milder effect.

Colour and Diet Remedies

Colour therapy is one of the simpler Jupiter remedies to integrate. Wearing yellow on Thursdays — in clothing, accessories, or even a yellow thread on the wrist — is a traditional practice that aligns your daily field with Jupiter’s frequency.

Dietary remedies associated with Jupiter include increasing yellow foods (turmeric, saffron, lentils, chickpeas), reducing alcohol and intoxicants (which dull Jupiter’s clarity), and incorporating more bitter and astringent tastes through herbs like neem or turmeric.

Service and Generosity

Perhaps the most effective Jupiter remedy of all is also the most practical: service. Jupiter is the natural significator of generosity, teaching, and giving. When you strengthen this quality in your behavior — teaching something you know, donating regularly, mentoring someone younger, giving without expectation of return — you activate Jupiter’s energy in a direct and embodied way.

Donating to spiritual organizations, educational institutions, or causes that support wisdom and learning on Thursdays is considered particularly effective.

Fasting

Observing a Thursday fast — either abstaining from food until sunset or eating only once — is a traditional Jupiter remedy that has been used across multiple Hindu lineages. It is a practice of discipline and devotion that sends a clear signal of intention to the planetary archetype you’re working with.

Combining Remedies with Healing Work

Vedic remedies are not meant to replace inner work. A weak Jupiter often correlates with limiting beliefs about worthiness, abundance, and spiritual connection — beliefs that mantras and gemstones alone won’t resolve.

Combining Jupiter remedies with deeper healing practices — whether energy healing, healing the inner child, or working with a skilled spiritual guide — tends to produce more lasting results than either approach alone.
